Just south of Port of Spain between the Uriah Butler expressway and the sea lies the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, a series of Mangrove lined waterways and tidal lagoon, the nesting location of the stunning Scarlet Ibis, national bird of Trinidad and Tobago.
One visits for the scenery and to watch the evening roosting of these bright red birds. While some species such as little blue herons, Tri- coloured heron, snowy egrets, sometimes Great egrets and even Neo-tropic cormorants join the Scarlet Ibis to roost.
The only way to see the impressive spectacle of thousands of Scarlet Ibises flocking to clump of mangroves where they settle for the night. We conduct a 4pm tour where we take a journey into the swamp searching for all the flora and fauna before we arrive at the roosting colony. Cruising true the tributary we may encounter nocturnal non poisonous tree boas coiled in their territory along the mangrove edges. In any giving day we can get a look at the spectacle caiman basking in the sun but most times we see them hidden between the mangrove roots. There is a mammal which is known as a Silky Anteater that live in the swamp hanging in the skinniest branch that they can find trying to camouflage. It is the smallest Anteater found in the western hemistphere and its not guarantee but out guide are well trained to find these amazing wild life for our guest. In Caroni swamp we recorded over 150 species of bird and in any good day you can see up to 30 + different species to be seen feeding in their natural habitat.

Scarlet Red Ibis

The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), locally known as "flamingo," makes its home in the Caroni Bird Sanctuary in the Caroni Swamp--an area set aside by the government for the protection of these colourful birds. The Caroni Swamp includes fifteen thousand acres of marshland, tidal lagoons, and mangrove trees. Several thousand Scarlet Ibises nest and roost in the sanctuary and are often seen in large numbers during the last two hours of daylight. Larger numbers of Scarlet Ibises can be seen when they are roosting . These birds feed mainly on crabs which they seek out on the mud flats exposed at low tide and on the stilt roots of the red mangrove. Boat tours of the Caroni Swamp are available throughout the year. The Scarlet Ibis is 0ne of over 400 species of birds recorded in Trinidad and Tobago. (Reference: ffrench, Richard P. The Birds. David Frost Introduces Trinidad & Tobago.
